Why anxiety treatment works better when tailored for the Asian community

When your therapist doesn’t get where you’re coming from, they might miss the true root cause for why you feel this way.

Some examples of why anxiety is different for Asian Americans:

  • Cultural values shape your personal expectations

  • Navigating between different identities

  • Immigration related stress

  • Facing discrimination and feeling like you never belong

  • Trauma passed down from how your family survived

These aren’t the only ways anxiety might look different for us. Working with a therapist who understands these dynamics means you can go deeper and develop strategies that actually work for you.

You don’t have to explain how you became you. And that’s one less thing to worry about.

There’s no shame in needing support

You were never meant to carry everything alone. 1 in 5 adults experience an anxiety disorder. That number is higher for Asian Americans.

Anxiety is a natural emotion that protects us. When it becomes constant, anxiety stops helping us and interferes with our daily life.

Anise’s care model was designed in partnership with Stanford and UC Berkeley

Anxiety can show up in many ways.

It might feel like:

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Being on edge all the time

  • You have no control over your life

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Having a hard time relaxing

  • Always wondering when something will go wrong

  • Racing thoughts

In cultures that value our mind-body connection but might not know how to voice these as rooted in our mental health, symptoms can show up physically. Anxiety could look like:

  • Tightness in the chest

  • Stomach problems

  • Headaches

  • Even tiredness all the time

What are the symptoms of anxiety?

What people often ask

  • Yes. Research and real-world experience show the client–therapist relationship strongly predicts outcomes. If you keep getting matched to the wrong fit and restarting with new therapists, progress slows.

  • Fill out a short intake form and get instantly matched to culturally-attuned Anise providers. Book your first session with no strings attached. Start your 5 min intake here >

  • On average, insurance clients will pay a ~$25 co-pay per session if we’re in-network but we recommend contacting your plan for the most accurate estimate.

Whether insurance or self-pay, all intake sessions come with a satisfaction guarantee. That means that if you’d like to try another intake session, we will help you meet with a different Anise Health provider at no additional cost.

  • Your treatment is tailored to your needs. You and your therapist will collaborate to figure out what works best for you. That could look like meeting once a week, every two weeks, or even multiple times a week if you need.

As you continue your care, you can discuss whether to adjust how often you’ll meet and change your schedule if it makes sense.

  • Coaching is a separate offering that you can add as part of your care. Coaching is a useful way to build new habits, manage daily routines, or get more hands-on support between therapy sessions. To ensure a seamless experience, your coach works closely with your therapist to provide fully integrated care. You can book your coaching sessions directly through the Patient Portal for a flat fee of $30 per session.

  • Anise supports a wide range of emotional and life challenges, especially those shaped by cultural identity. Note: We currently do not offer medication management, couples/family therapy, or in-person care.

  • We are confident in our providers’ abilities to meet your needs, but understand that not everyone is a perfect fit! If you’d like to try another intake session, we will help you meet with a different provider at no additional cost.
